Last week our
team reviewed Avilog, the pilot logbook app for
iOS and Android
with tons of handy features for faster aviation logging. This app impressed us
and we believe it can be of immense help for pilots. For that reason we decided
to make it our Utility App of the Week. Read more about why below.
For decades,
being a pilot has meant carrying around a heavy, leather-bound book, or a
disorganized mess of spreadsheets, to track every single hour spent in the sky.
It’s a tedious, manual chore where one math error can cause a massive headache
during a license renewal. Enter Avilog, a digital pilot logbook that feels less
like a database and more like a personal flight assistant.
The Digital Transition
Walking through
the Avilog interface, it’s clear the creators actually spend time in cockpits.
Instead of clunky rows and columns, the app uses a clean, intuitive layout that
works across your iPhone, iPad, and Mac. The Live Sync feature is a subtle hero
here; you can log a flight on your phone while walking off the jet bridge, and
by the time you open your laptop at the hotel, the data is already there, safe
in the cloud.
The real magic
lies in the app's features. Smart databases with an aircraft mean you don't
have to manually enter all the information about the aircraft, all the
information about each individual is already packed in.
Navigating the Red Tape
Aviation is a
world of acronyms and strict rules. Whether you’re flying under FAA rules in
the States, EASA in Europe, or CASA and GCAA elsewhere, the paperwork
requirements vary wildly.
Avilog handles
this complexity behind the scenes. It formats your entries to match the
specific requirements of your aviation authority, making it
"audit-ready" at a moment's notice. It even tracks your flight
limits, gently reminding you when you’re approaching your flight time ceilings,
a feature that provides genuine peace of mind in a high-stress industry.
A Visual Journey
Perhaps the most
"human" element of the app is the integrated Map Feature. While
traditional logbooks are just lists of airport codes and numbers, Avilog turns
your career into a visual story. Seeing your flight paths traced across a
global map transforms a dry record of work into a vivid history of where you’ve
been.
For those
worried about leaving their old records behind, the app offers a surprisingly
painless migration. It can import data from old-school favorites like LogTen
Pro or FlyLog, ensuring your entire history, from your very first solo to your
latest long-haul, is preserved in one place.
The Bottom Line
Avilog doesn’t
just digitize a pilot's hours; it gives them back their time. In an industry
that is increasingly automated, this app manages to take the most robotic part
of the job and make it feel effortless, organized, and, dare we say, a bit more
enjoyable.
